BREAST LIFT SURGERY

You have probably thought about having breast lift surgery for some time. You may have noticed that your breasts are not as full or shapely as they used to be. Breastfeeding, weight changes, and the natural aging process all can cause the breasts to droop, sag, and lose volume. Breast lift surgery at The Plastic Surgery Group can help restore your breasts to a more rounded, youthful appearance.

IS A BREAST LIFT RIGHT FOR ME?

Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) can help you have fuller, perkier, shapelier breasts once again. In most cases, women who have smaller breasts realize longer lasting results from breast lift surgery because their breasts are not heavy; but breasts of all sizes can be successfully lifted. Some women with small breasts and relatively little breast sagging may be able to undergo a less-invasive procedure such as a doughnut mastopexy. Some women choose breast augmentation in addition to, or instead of, a breast lift to attain their desired fullness.

HOW IS A BREAST LIFT PERFORMED?

In most cases, breast lift surgery takes 1 to 3 hours. While our surgeons are skilled in several surgical techniques, they typically place an incision around the natural shape of the breast, defining the area of excess breast skin that will be removed. After the removal of the excess breast skin, the areola is repositioned to a higher spot on the breast, and the skin is positioned around the areola to create the enhanced breast shape. Stitches are placed along the incision around the areola, down from the nipple, and sometimes along the breast crease.

Women with only slight breast sagging and small breasts can often undergo a doughnut (concentric) breast lift. This technique involves circular incisions around the areola and the removal of a piece of skin in the shape of a doughnut. The breast skin that was around the nipple is then repositioned and brought together to form the newly shaped breast. If breast augmentation is combined with breast lift surgery, the implant is inserted either directly below the breast tissue or beneath the muscle of the chest wall. Your plastic surgeon will discuss these options during your consultation.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE AFTER A BREAST LIFT?

Because a breast lift involves the skin, not the muscle, recovery is typically quick. Your plastic surgeon will give you detailed instructions to follow before and after surgery. It is important to the recovery process to follow these instructions closely.

FIRST FEW DAYS
After breast lift surgery, you will most likely experience some bruising and swelling. The first few days following your surgery you will wear a surgical bra over the bandages on your breasts.

FIRST WEEK
Breast lift patients usually are ready to return to work or school within a week.

1 TO 2 WEEKS
Stitches will come out within 1 to 2 weeks. You might notice some loss of sensation in your nipples and the skin of your breasts. This is usually caused by the swelling following the surgery and, in most cases, disappears over 5 to 6 weeks. In some cases, however, loss of sensation may last several months or a year, and in rare instances it can be permanent.

RESTRICTIONS DURING RECOVERY
You should be careful not to do any lifting above your head or participate in sports for about a month.

NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS
Your scars will gradually fade, thin, and soften over several months.

HOW MUCH DOES A BREAST LIFT COST?

The cost for a breast lift depends on many factors including the complexity of the procedure and whether it will be combined with other procedures. The range for a breast lift is typically $5,500 to $8,500. We offer patient financing to help most patients afford to pursue their desired improvements. For the best possible surgical outcome, it’s important to consider your surgeon’s credentials above cost. Visit Meet the Surgeons to learn more about our exceptional team.

WHERE DOES THE SURGERY TAKE PLACE?

Our surgeons perform breast lift surgery at an outpatient surgery center near our practice.

WILL I BE AWAKE DURING THE SURGERY?

Breast lift surgery is typically conducted using general anesthesia, so you will be completely asleep through the surgery. Sometimes, the plastic surgeon will use a local anesthetic and sedatives to cause drowsiness if smaller incisions are going to be made. Discuss this with your plastic surgeon during your consultation.

CAN BREAST IMPLANTS BE INSERTED DURING A BREAST LIFT?

Combining breast lift surgery with augmentation is an excellent idea for patients who want to enhance both the shape and size of their breasts for a more comprehensive result. Your surgeon will help you choose the perfect type of breast implants to complement your breast lift surgery.

CAN I BREASTFEED AFTER BREAST LIFT SURGERY?

Breast lift surgery doesn’t usually stop a woman from breastfeeding. But, if you are considering getting pregnant in the near future, it is recommended that you have your breast lift surgery after you give birth so as not to negate the positive outcome of the surgery.
