ASYMMETRIC BREAST SURGERY

It is not uncommon for a woman to have one breast that is considerably smaller than the other. Asymmetric breasts can make you feel self-conscious both in and out of clothing. It can also be difficult to find a bra or swimsuit that fits properly. Corrective breast surgery at The Plastic Surgery Group can give you more evenly sized and shaped breasts for a balanced figure and renewed self-confidence.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

Surgery for uneven breasts in our Albany practice is performed by one of our highly qualified plastic surgeons. Small incisions are made in the area around the areola and nipple. In many cases, we use a breast implant as with breast augmentation to fill out the smaller breast and help it match the appearance of the normally shaped breast. In other cases, an implant may not be necessary to achieve the desired results.

When an implant is used, the size and shape of the asymmetric breast can be determined with your plastic surgeon prior to your surgery. He or she will explain to you the different types of implants that are best suited for your particular case. The nipple and areola of the asymmetric breast can also be repositioned to be a better match the other breast. Keep in mind that no 2 breasts naturally are identical; there will always be slight differences between them. But, your plastic surgeon will make every effort to make your asymmetric breast look natural and symmetrical with your other breast.

Asymmetric breast surgery is usually conducted under a general anesthetic. This outpatient procedure can take several hours to complete. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this with you during your private consultation.

Recovery
Initially after your breast surgery you will feel fatigued. You may experience some soreness and your breast may be tender. Your plastic surgeon can help you feel more comfortable with prescribed medications. You will wear a surgical bra to help support your breast.

In most cases, you’ll return home the day of your surgery. Chances are you’ll want to sleep and that’s the best thing to do the first day or 2 following your surgery. You may also feel a little wan for several days afterwards. This is not unusual as your body is beginning its healing. You may also notice swelling around your breast and there may be some bruising. This is also normal and will decrease and eventually fade completely within a week or so. Most of the time, women will feel quite comfortable to resume their normal activities a week or 10 days following their surgery. Plan on being home from work for at least a week.

As your newly shaped breast heals it will gradually lower itself on your chest to its natural position. Within 3 to 4 weeks, you will look in the mirror and enjoy the results that you and your plastic surgeon had discussed and planned together – a more attractive chest contour and greatly enhanced self-confidence!

Potential Risks or Complications
Asymmetric breast surgery is a comparatively safe procedure with very rare complications. As with any type of surgery, however, there is a chance of an infection developing or an adverse reaction to anesthesia. These instances are rare and if they do occur can be monitored and effectively treated by your plastic surgeon.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF IMPLANTS USED IN ASYMMETRIC BREAST SURGERY?

Yes. There are 2 primary types of implants that your plastic surgeon may use during your asymmetric breast surgery. The most popular kinds are round and tear-shaped implants. The type your plastic surgeon uses depends on the overall size and shape that you and your doctor decide is best for your breast and body type. He or she will discuss this with you during your consultation.

WILL THERE BE VISIBLE SCARS?

In most cases, scarring is very minimal and virtually unnoticeable because your plastic surgeon will make very small incisions in areas that will naturally hide the scars. Dissolving stitches also will be used which will further lessen scarring.

DOES INSURANCE COVER ASYMMETRIC BREAST SURGERY?

Usually insurance does not cover this procedure, but it is always recommended that you contact your health care provider and discuss insurance coverage with your plastic surgeon.

HOW LONG SHOULD I PLAN ON BEING OUT FROM WORK?

Plan on taking a week off from work. In many cases, women feel comfortable enough to return to work and their normal activities in less than a week, however.
