TUBEROUS BREAST SURGERY

BEFORE & AFTERS
What Causes Tuberous Breasts?
A tuberous shape happens when the breasts don’t finish developing during puberty. As a result, the connective tissue between the areola and the rest of the breast never forms all the way, leading to a more triangular shape. Researchers aren’t completely sure what stops this connective tissue from completely forming, but studies suggest that it could be from:
- Hormone imbalances
- Genetics
- Something happening in utero
Am I A Good Candidate For A Tuberous Breast Correction?
If your breasts have the shape described above and it makes you feel uncomfortable about your appearance, you are likely an excellent candidate for tuberous breast surgery. Patients should not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding and must be at or near a healthy body weight.
In some cases, you and your plastic surgeon may also decide to utilize a breast lift. Your plastic surgeon will discuss this option with you during your consultation.
Your Tuberous Breast Procedure
Tuberous breast surgery usually involves small incisions around the areola to help loosen the tight skin. Sometimes, the plastic surgeon will place a breast implant in the underside of the breast below the muscle tissue, much like when we perform a breast augmentation for our Syracuse and Albany patients.
The implant will help the loosened skin of the breast and areola area reshape itself into a more natural appearance. This change may take months to fully occur, but improved breast shape will be noticeable immediately following tuberous breast surgery.
This treatment is usually performed using general anesthesia and takes two to three hours. If a breast lift is performed at the same time as the tubular breast surgery, the operation may take longer.
Tuberous Breast Surgery Recovery
Immediately following your tuberous breast surgery, you’ll wear an elastic surgical garment around your breasts to give them support and help reduce swelling. Usually, most patients are not too uncomfortable during the first day or two. If you experience moderate pain, your plastic surgeon can prescribe medications to make you more comfortable.
Swelling will usually go away in two to three weeks and you will be on your way to enjoying a more natural breast profile and greatly enhanced self-confidence. Remember, everyone heals at a different rate. The new shape of your breasts will continue to develop for up to six months after your surgery as your breast tissue spreads over the implant and naturally expands and repositions itself.
How Much Does This Procedure Cost?
The price involved to correct tuberous breasts depends on the particular techniques used, such as if implants or a lift are needed. In most cases, insurance does not cover the cost of this procedure, but it is always wise to check with your insurance carrier.
